Dec. 2023, Zoetis Inc. 3 | Supports the veterinary-client-patient relationship Watching their dog suffer from chronic itching and irritation can significantly stress veterinary clients, especially if previous treatment attempts were ineffective due to the increased time and difficulty of administering a conventional tablet. Did you know the #1 most important factor driving pruritus treatment decisions for pet owners was "improves my dog's quality of life"? 4 Therefore, the veterinary-prescribed therapies for allergic itch should relieve the dog's clinical signs and help minimize the anxiety and stress experienced when receiving the treatment. Apoquel Chewable can help address this challenge in two ways. First, it provides fast relief - in a flea allergic dermatitis model, Apoquel Chewable started relieving allergic itch in 4 hours. 5 Second, it may eliminate the stress 25% of dog owners experience pilling their itchy dog. 1 Ultimately, veterinary health care teams can strengthen client loyalty when the veterinary therapies they recommend reinforce – rather than weaken – the human-animal bond. 4 | Palatability for pets Increased palatability may improve the dog's willingness to accept medication without the owner's manual manipulation, added calories, or lengthy preparation. As such, Apoquel Chewable administration can be more rewarding for both the dog and owner. In a study of client-owned dogs, 91.6% of Apoquel Chewable doses offered by the owner were consumed fully and voluntarily. 2 This could lead to additional benefits, like less waste or accidentally missed doses and easier medication administration. 5 | Familiarity with the pet product If your practice prescribes Apoquel tablets, you're likely already familiar with the medication's dosing, available strengths, indications, and expected outcomes. Apoquel Chewable is expected to provide comparable efficacy to Apoquel tablet after the first dose, and comparable safety to Apoquel tablet. 6,7 This similar profile means veterinarians can confidently recommend and introduce Apoquel Chewable to newly diagnosed dogs with allergic itch whose owners would have difficulty administering a conventional tablet daily on a regular basis. Veterinarians also can transition dogs currently on Apoquel tablet to the chewable formulation with ease. Veterinary teams need to collaborate with their clients to determine the Apoquel formulation that will provide the best experience and treatment outcome. This collaboration should be based on the veterinary team's previous knowledge and familiarity with Apoquel tablets and the challenges owners face administering conventional tablets to their dogs. Questions to help guide the conversation include: • Can you describe the experience of medicating your pet? • Would you prefer a tablet or chewable medication? Successful control of allergic itch in dogs requires more than a safe and effective medication — the treatment should also be convenient, practical, and, whenever possible, positively impact the human-animal bond. When these parameters are met, the "whys" behind chewables are similar to the personal "whys" that drive veterinary professionals every day — it's all for the love, health, and betterment of pets.
