RETAILOBSERVER.COM MARCH 2026 4 Eliana Barriga eliana@retailobserver.com Spring is time to rise, MARCH 2026, VOLUME 37, ISSUE 3 CELEBRATING OUR 36 TH YEAR AS THE RETAIL OBSERVER Elle's View As I See It T here is a quiet confidence running through this year's NKBA Design + Industry Award winners — and it feels different. Announced at KBIS, the 2026 winners don't simply showcase beautiful kitchens; they reflect a maturing market. With more than 700 entries evaluated on innovation, planning, safety, and creativity, the projects in this issue reveal a clear shift: design with intention. Consider the Best Overall Kitchen winner — the Specialty Castle Scullery and Castle Kitchen: its historic architecture has been preserved while its functionality has been fully reimagined. Oversized islands, custom brass details, layered lighting, and hyper- functional prep zones prove that elegance and efficiency now coexist. In the Large Kitchen category, multigenerational living shapes the designer's layout decisions, including hidden coffee stations, integrated pulls, fluted marble waterfall edges, and generous walkways designed for gathering. Even the Small Kitchen winners demonstrate that scale does not limit impact. Strong veining, recessed dining integrations, clever storage, and bold material contrast create luxury within compact footprints. These spaces feel thoughtful, not showy. What strikes me most is that none of these designs chase trend for trend's sake. They are purposeful. And that mirrors what many of you are seeing in your showrooms. The contractor payment data iWallet, featured this month - reinforces it: average job sizes are rising even as transaction counts soften. Homeowners may be tackling fewer projects, but they are choosing to do them well. They are investing in longevity, performance, and spaces that truly support daily life. As we move into spring, that feels encouraging. Clients are asking better questions. They want smart storage, layered lighting, durable materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow. They want kitchens that gather people and baths that restore them. For independent retailers, this is your moment. Lead with expertise. Tell complete design stories. Guide with confidence and care. The award winners may set the standard — but excellence lives locally. It lives in your consultations, your craftsmanship, your listening. And when we build with intention, we don't just remodel homes. We elevate how people live.
