This article covers the replacement of the oil pan gasket on an Allis-Chalmers 160 tractor. These tractors are an odd duck for most Allis-Chalmers mechanics since they were made by Renault in France, imported to the U.S. and sold as the Model 160 from Allis- Chalmers. The Perkins 3.152 diesel engine is familiar to Allis mechanics, but not the Renault drivetrain and rear end. On the 160, the best way to replace the pan gasket is to remove the engine from the tractor. This requires splitting the tractor at the clutch and hoisting the engine out of the front end. The pan gasket is a four-piece set, similar to the WD pan gasket with cork end gaskets and paper side gaskets. Replacing your 160 engine oil pan gasket Use a hoist to remove the engine from between the frame rails. Remove clutch, flywheel and rear engine adapter. Remove all bolts holding oil pan to engine block, except two. Loosen the last two bolts one-quarter inch out. Don't forget about the two long bolts at the back of the oil pan that are almost hidden. Gently tap the oil pan to separate it from the engine block. Remove the last two bolts and remove the pan. Disconnect battery. Drain engine oil and coolant. Split the tractor at the clutch. Chock rear tires in front and back. Roll front end of tractor away from rear end. Support frame of tractor in front of front axle and behind front axle.
