RETAILOBSERVER.COM SEPTEMBER 2026 4 Eliana Barriga eliana@retailobserver.com Keep planting good things, SEPTEMBER 2026, VOL. 37, ISSUE 9 CELEBRATING OUR 36 TH YEAR AS THE RETAIL OBSERVER Elle's View As I See It A s summer gives way to autumn, nature reminds us of a timeless truth: every harvest begins long before the first fruit appears. The same is true in business. Success rarely arrives overnight. It's built through relationships nurtured, promises kept, problems solved, and customers served well. What we invest today often determines what comes back to us tomorrow. For independent retailers, September signals a shift. Holiday plans take shape, inventory decisions matter, teams prepare, and attention turns toward the critical months ahead. But preparation isn't only about what's on the showroom floor. It's also about the relationships we've built all year. The customer who returns because you stood behind a product. The family who recommends you because someone took the extra time to solve a problem. The long-time customer who doesn't bother shopping around anymore because you've earned their trust. That's not sentiment. That's good business. Trust compounds. So does reputation. And while a strong promotion or great advertising can bring customers through the door, what happens next determines whether they come back. Reputation is built quietly, transaction by transaction, throughout the year. As we enter one of retail's most important seasons, it's worth asking what we've been planting along the way. Have we earned trust? Delivered on our promises? Given customers a reason to come back? Built the kind of reputation people are comfortable putting their own name behind when they recommend us? Because ultimately, the strongest businesses aren't built in a single great quarter. They're built through hundreds of small decisions made when no one's keeping score. Autumn may be the season of harvest, but the harvest simply reveals the work that came before it. And in business, as in life, we tend to gather what we've taken the time to grow.
