We Rub You—Spicy Korean BBQ Marinade
➍
COOKING SAUCE OR FLAVOR ENHANCER
➊
SISTERS ANN AND JANET CHUNG HAD A DREAM to bottle their family
recipe for Korean BBQ sauce. So like many fledgling food businesses based in
Brooklyn, N.Y., the sisters set up a stand in Brooklyn Flea's Smorgasburg and
sold sliders marinated in their signature sauce. "What we got from the market
is that people loved the flavor and would definitely buy it," says Ann Chung.
The name We Rub You stems from the fact that "the Korean alphabet
lacks a distinct L/R or V/B [sound], so 'we rub you' is a cute way of saying 'we love you,'"
Chung explains. The sisters introduced their bottled marinades on Valentine's Day 2013, the
day of "rub." They launched with two flavors: original and the winning spicy variety, which
showcases the hotter side of Korean flavors by using authentic ingredients like gochujang,
fermented chile peppers.
"We want people to be able to eat Korean food at home the way we do," Chung says.
"These marinades are a healthy solution to what's offered in the marketplace, while keeping
a natural flavor profile." The marinades are made with all-natural ingredients, no added MSG,
artificial colors or preservatives. And the cooking possibilities are endless: beyond Korean
BBQ, fans have used the marinade as jerky seasoning, a base for stir-fried noodles, dipping
sauce or as a finishing sauce for proteins. Suggested retail price: $9/15 ounces. Contact: Ann
