Carolina Creole Stone Ground Grits
LUQUIRE FAMILY FOODS' STONE-GROUND WHITE CORN GRITS has been
a labor of love for nearly 85 years. "We look back to our family members
that started all of this," says company president Jason Luquire. "The
groundwork was laid for us."
The grits were originally milled by Luquire's grandfather on the family's
farm in Greenwood, S.C., and were often shared with the community. Today,
the definition of community is expanding as the family's products are sold at retail and in
bulk. "Foodservice is a big part of our business and it's growing immensely," Luquire says.
The white corn grits are coarsely ground in the granite stones of an antique gristmill.
This method results in grits that are fuller and bigger with a rich taste and creamy texture,
Luquire explains. He believes the distinctive flavor comes from the all-natural, non-GMO
white corn the company uses; the salt, heavy cream and butter all add to the rich flavor.
Luquire recommends pairing the grits with the company's sofi-winning Carolina Creole
sauce. Sampling the Southern staple is helpful to educate customers who have tried only
instant grits, Luquire notes. It takes just a small bite, he says, for customers to see what
they're missing. Suggested retail price: $4.50/1.5 pounds. Contact: Jason Luquire, Luquire
