Clarke Historical Library Reference Assistant Bryan Whitledge helped us hunt down the answer. "We believe that the 'Fire Up Chips' saying dates from the late 1960s," Whitledge says. "The first time that the term appears in Central Michigan Life is 1967 and relates to a homecoming float by Calkins Hall which carried the term." In the early 1970s, "Fire Up Chips" started to appear regularly throughout the student newspaper and yearbooks. Now it's your turn – were you a Calkins Hall resident or a student during the 1960s who could shed some light on the beginning of this phrase?
