Seminar & Speaker Highlights Frank L. Bennardo, P.E. Engineering Express® THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1:00 TO 2:30 P.M. Building Component Evaluations and Lessons Learned from Sandy This session will cover the latest in wind pressure and building component product evaluation engineering and correlate it to findings from Bennardo's inspection work in Superstorm Sandy. Dramatic photos from the storm will illustrate the importance of proper design and construction against future design wind and surge events. Bennardo is licensed in 25 states across the eastern United States, and owns and operates three companies in the specialty structural engineering, storm product manufacturing and building product evaluation information industries. An expert in his field, he is elevating the engineering field to better standards and technological advancements as well as playing a major role in educating and assisting in storm damage evaluation and repair from Superstorm Sandy across the northeast. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 3:00 TO 4:30 P.M. FORTIFIED Homes: Expanding Opportunities for Contractors, Manufacturers and Suppliers There are 18 coastal states that are affected by land-falling hurricanes with approximately 46 percent of the total U.S. population. Over the last five years, The FORTIFIED Home programs national implementation is reducing exposure to preventable losses resulting in stronger building codes, meeting consumer demands for safer homes, and resulting in lower insurance and lifecycle costs. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) launched the program in 2010. Since the initial launch in Alabama, two coastal states have adopted mandatory mitigation credits for all admitted carriers. Beyond the states requiring mandatory credits, some of the largest insurance companies in the U.S. also are offering voluntary credits and competitive coverage options. This presentation will outline the states that are requiring discounts, look at voluntary expansion by the insurance industry and how contractors and manufacturers can expand their business opportunities in almost all of the 18 coastal states. "12 weeks working at Ground Zero after Sandy produced some amazing photos, horrific stories and critical lessons learned you wouldn't want to miss—invaluable information for providing compliant product sales and installation." Darius H. Grimes CRC, CSI, CDT, CWMS Disaster Smart Consulting, Inc. "The awareness of business opportunities is critical to the ability to not survive but grow your business. You won't want to miss this opportunity to learn more about emerging markets and opportunities." Grimes' experience combines a diverse 25-plus year career in manufacturing, distribution and construction with a talent for complex design and innovative solutions. His many contributions to the construction industry are based on a well-developed consultative approach reflecting years of hands-on experience, engineering understanding, and development of installation techniques earning him national industry recognition. Grimes started Disaster-Smart Consulting Inc. in February 2009. DSCI has quickly positioned itself as a leader in multi-peril coastal risk inspection while continuing to apply its knowledge to collaborate with likeminded organizations to development, promote, and implement economically sustainable solutions for the built environment.
