Ideas
Invasives are non-native plants that
are so aggressive they crowd out
native vegetation and the wildlife
that relies on it. They can also
spread quickly and take over
your landscape. Go to the California
Invasive Plant Council website for
more information. Invasive tree

Allergies
If allergies are an issue for your family
or your neighbors, go to the SelectTree
website, use Health Hazard filter and
select Isn't Allergy. Here are a few tips
to help:
Tree gender matters. Female trees
produce berries, seeds and fruit while
male trees produce pollen – so buy female
trees to reduce allergic reactions. Look
for berries to identify them. If you're
not sure, ask the nursery staff for help.
California native trees such as oaks, pines,
sycamores and cottonwoods look good
in a Mediterranean garden but they are
highly allergenic.
Allergic responses to citrus trees are
more commonly caused by aroma than
pollen. Less aromatic alternatives include
strawberry guava (Psidium cattlelanum),
pineapple guava (Acca sellowiana),
pomegranate (Punica granatum)
and fuyu persimmon (Diospyros
kaki 'Fuyu').
