Since 2007, California taxpayers have had the oppor tunity to contribute to sea otter con- servation and research through giving as little as $1 to the fund when filing taxes. The fund is line 410 on the form. Each year, the contributions go toward multi-agency and organization effor ts to help save the endangered California sea otter. The California Franchise Tax board sets a min- imum requirement each year that every fund on the tax form needs to meet in order to be on income tax forms in the subsequent year. This year the California Sea Otter Fund requirement is $277,666. The fund must meet or exceed this requirement to help protect sea otters. For more information on the fund, how to con- tribute, and what types of restoration efforts the money has funded, visit www.seaotters.org/checkoff. Grammy-winning coun- try music artist and California native Merle Haggard takes the stage at Carmel's Sunset Center on Sunday, March 9. The icon has been a fan favorite for more than 50 years, thanks to songs such as "Mama Tried," "Okie From Muskogee" and "If We Make It Through December." Haggard was born outside of Bakersfield in 1937, and spent the early part of his musical career playing to the city's country music fans. He recorded his first single in 1964, and first went to number one in 1967 with "The Fugitive." His songs touch on themes of pover- ty, politics and prison time (Haggard did a stint at San Quentin state prison as a young man), as well as relationships and joy. Haggard's 1980 duet "Bar Room Buddies" features vocal work by actor and director Clint Eastwood. Haggard has released 39 number-one hits and earned several Grammy, Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994, and he took Kennedy Center Honors in 2010. North Salinas High School graduate and Olympic softball player Monica Abbott has established a scholarship fund benefitting female athletes. The 2008 Olympic medalist and member of Adorable yet endangered California sea otters receive assistance through even small dona- tions to the California Sea Otter Fund. To help save them, go to line 410 of your tax return.
