37 centralight winter '10 Alumni News 37 centralight summer '14 Nine CMU alumni help Flint Journal win Newspaper of the Year CMU alumni make up nearly half the editorial staff of The Flint Journal, which recently was named Newspaper of the Year by the Michigan Press Association. The Flint Journal staff also won the association's prestigious Public Service Award for its powerful anti-suicide campaign, #iwantyoutoknow. Most of the nine CMU alumni on staff are former editors of CM Life, CMU's student newspaper. The CMU alumni are: Marjory Raymer, '95; David Harris, '08; Dominic Adams, '06; Aaron McMann, '13; Eric Dresden, '13; Gary Ridley, '08; Sarah Schuch, '10; and Dana DeFever, '09. Jake May hasn't yet graduated. The Journal was honored for its weeklong examination of suicide in the community and how to curb Flint's high suicide rate. The project was spurred by the suicide death of a Flint teen. "We covered the story, but that didn't seem like enough," says editor Raymer, former editor of CM Life. "We needed to do more." Raymer said the CMU-trained journalists on her staff "have no fear of jumping in headfi rst. "They work hard at the nuts and bolts," she says. "There's this scrappy, go-get- 'em kind of attitude. Like CMU spirit. One thing I learned at Central is never just take what's in front of you and accept the status quo. You should always be looking for a way to be better." • More information.
