20 STORM & SECURITY PROTECTION / FORECAST 2014 The Angstadt's three-level Avalon, NJ, beach home emphasizes ocean views and safety. FIELD / WORK Robust Seaside Retreat A spacious seaside home protected from severe weather, sound penetration and burglary attempts When building a home in a seaside neighborhood, views are of utmost importance. For Eric and Bianca Angstadt's new shore retreat in Avalon, NJ, a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, views were a key to the very design. The 3,700-square foot structure boasts a unique interior design and ocean views from the top floors. "Windows in this home were a major design element for me," says Bianca Angstadt, who designed the home. "I requested bench seat windows in the front of the home for viewing the ocean and massive windows on the top two floors to connect us with the seaside setting." The Avalon home features a multitude of Simonton ProFinish® Brickmould 600 windows and patio doors to capture views from every angle and allow in natural daylight. A stunning two-story living area in the front of the house is accented with floor-to-ceiling windows. A second-floor kitchen and dining area at the back of the home provide instant access to a pool and entertainment area through massive patio door configurations and decks. "I poured 25 years of design experience and passion into this home," says Bianca Angstadt, owner of Designs by Bianca. "This house was in my mind for several years. Working with Studio One Architects to create the blueprints and Logic Builders to construct the home itself was a wonderful experience." A specialist in design and construction management, Angstadt requested that the bedrooms and laundry be located on the first floor, with the main living space on the second floor to capture ocean views. The master bedroom, located on the third floor, offers the most direct and stunning views of the ocean. Peace of Mind For the multitude of windows and patio doors in the home, Studio One Architects specified impact-resistant SafePoint glass packages. "There are many reasons why we specified the SafePoint glass package in Simonton windows for this and other shore area homes we design," says Steven O'Such, a designer with Studio One Architects, Avalon. "First, there are code considerations because we're so close to the ocean," he says. But there is a convenience aspect to the decision, too. "Many of the homes here are secondary homes for people. If there's the threat of bad weather these homeowners don't have time to make the trip to Avalon and board or shutter up their windows," he says. "With the impact-resistant SafePoint glass in these windows, the homeowners know their windows are working 24-7 to help protect the home. These windows also help reduce sound penetration into the home from noisy traffic conditions, are extremely energy efficient to help reduce energy bills, and they resist burglary attempts, so there's tremendous peace of mind for the owners." SafePoint laminated glass has an impact-resistant interlayer that can withstand repeated blows by a heavy object. SafePoint glass complements alarm systems and deadbolts for even greater security. With a Sound Transmission Rating (STC) of 32-36, SafePoint glass dramatically reduces unwanted noise infiltration.
