FORECAST 2014 / STORM & SECURITY PROTECTION 17 Computer models were developed to calculate anticipated losses of future storms. The computer simulations take into account such variables as building coverage that otherwise is excluded unless specifically endorsed (off premise power interruption) and the geographic pattern of peak gusty winds, surrounding topography, maximum sustained winds and the slowing of wind speeds as the storm moves inland. What's New Two additional factors that determine what your wallet will look like after the wind and water retreat are storm surge and demand surge. Storm surge is calculated from historical perspective and is divided into two zones: the high-velocity zone where debris driven by wave action can relentlessly smash up structures; and the inland zone, where the chief concern is flooding. The final component is demand surge, which is the amount of inflation that will occur in the cost of building materials and labor after a hurricane strike— the larger the area of destruction, the higher the inflation facto. . Demand surge is the least understood and the most expensive out-of-pocket cost for business owners. One storm covering a large area, or one small storm of great intensity, will create such devastation that your business interruption coverage will be exhausted and your $500,000 market value building could easily cost $600,000 to be repaired after a major storm. Having no income to sustain your operations and an underinsured building is usually fatal for a business. As the 2014 Hurricane season begins with favorable predictions of mild activity, the slogan "What's in your wallet?" should be replaced by "What's covered in my insurance policy?" It only takes one.
