Goode, president of PFAR Consulting. The 2014 ExcipientFest confer- ence and trade show took place April 28-30 at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, NC. Presented by the International Pharmaceutical Excipient Council of the Americas (IPEC-Americas), the event offered workshops, educational sessions, exhibits, and a roundtable discussion. About 430 people attended. Excellence in excipients Tablets & Capsules, a member of IPEC-Americas, was the media spon- sor of Monday's "State Dinner," where the group recognized industry lead- ers who advanced its mission of pro- moting high-quality pharmaceutical excipients (photo): • Ann Van Meter, business quality leader at Dow Wolff Cellulosics; • Priscilla Zawislak, global regula- tory affairs manager for Ashland's pharmaceutical and nutritional specialties unit; John Punzi, director of quality assurance and technical affairs at the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), accepted an industry award on behalf of CHPA. Conference The conference and exhibition began Tuesday and included presen- tations on improving the robustness of bi-layer tablets, modernizing and harmonizing excipient monographs, evaluating tablet lubricants, improv- ing audits, and assessing the eco- nomic impact of Quality by Design. The day concluded with a panel discussion: "Novel excipients: Needs, challenges, and opportunities." To - day, no new excipient can be ap - proved until it is used in an approved drug product, and all panelists agreed that's a problem.
