24 October 2014 Tablets & Capsules Issue focus quality, validation & regulatory compliance Vision inspection Company equips its single- and multi- lane printing and drilling systems with high-resolution vision inspection sys- tems. They use pattern-recognition and image-matching to inspect logos and other brand imprints, as well as laser- drilled apertures. Systems detect range of flaws, including poor print registration; incomplete printing; blurry or double printing; chipped, capped, or broken product; coating defects; stains and specks. They also detect issues with laser drilling, including aperture location and size. Vacuum-drum pick-off provides sin- gle-tablet rejection; results display in real time. Systems handle R&D and small- batch quantities as well as commercial production at 400,000 tablets and cap- sules (including softgels) per hour. Equip- ment is 21 CFR 11-compliant and includes FAT documentation; IQ/OQ documentation is also available. Com- pany offers start-up assistance, training, and service. Ackley Machine, Moorestown, NJ. Unit has touch- screen control; data is recorded auto- matically and stored in user-friendly Tool Management-II database, prevent- ing human error in data entry. Webcam takes photos during punch inspection and saves them to database. Punch- matching feature detects deviations between upper and lower punches to help ensure consistent tablet thickness, hardness, and weight. Database lets you quickly access details and reports, including tool usage history; lot num- ber; tablet press used; and when to pol- ish, inspect, and discard tooling.
