A ndrea Bar tholick Pace comes from an ar tistic family. Her mother studied fashion design; her father, a prominent Pacific Nor thwest architect, welcomed his young daughter to flip through drawings in his office. Bartholick Pace eventually studied art and interior architecture, and today completes projects for American and international clients. One of the latest is a 1940s cottage in Monterey's Peter's Gate neighborhood, where Bartholick Pace transformed a dark kitchen outfitted with blue plastic laminate into a spacious, sunny gathering spot with a built-in hutch. "The biggest compliment is when people visit and think the hutch is original to the home," she says. Re-envisioning interiors and creating comfortable, beautiful rooms comes naturally to the Carmel creative, who says she'd be exploring archaeological interests if she hadn't chosen a design career. "Archaeology is the study of how people used to live, and design is the study of how people want to live," she says.
