12 / JOURNEY The University is now offering nurses with an associate-level nursing degree the opportunity to pursue their Bachelor of Science in nursing completely online, plus a site-based clinical experience. The program debuted in the fall. "The Institute of Medicine has recommended an increase in the proportion of nurses with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing by 80 percent by 2020," said Sue McBee, associate professor of nursing. Carson-Newman has offered an RN to BSN program, but until now it has been integrated on campus with the traditional BSN program. An online option allows students more flexibility and to not be limited by their location to campus. McBee says the RN to BSN program at Carson-Newman stands out in its focus on leadership development, nursing ethics and character development, in-depth nursing knowledge and application of the concept of social justice in practice. ONLINE PROGRAM EQUALS MORE OPTIONS FOR NURSES Open to nurses with an RN license, the RN to BSN online program can be completed in a one, two, or three-year track. Students will complete 33 nursing credit hours as well as complete Carson-Newman's liberal arts core. Required clinical experiences may be obtained at the student's local medical facilities.
