"I'd like for people to know that
Carson-Newman has faculty
members who have given their lives
to this institution," said the retired
ophthalmologist and supporter of
Carson-Newman's Women of Vision's
effort to remodel the space. "These
professors had other opportunities, but
they felt this was where they should
be. Their attraction to this place was
special."
Honoring the elder Chapman in the
building's lobby is fitting on several
levels. Using his location in the bottom
of Warren Science Building, he became
the face of the campaign to erect the
new structure, along with the slogan,
"Get Joe out of the basement!" His
diligence resulted in a $100,000
donation from T.H. Dougherty, a 1911
graduate who made the contribution
as a matching gift to inspire others. It
is but one demonstration of Chapman
helping people find their place at
Carson-Newman.
As a local student deeply committed
to playing football at the University
of Tennessee, Professor of Biology
Dr. Bob Trentham '84 could have
never guessed that Chapman, who
he knew just as the dad of a friend,
would one day become a venerated
guide. Realizing that his gridiron days
at UT would be relegated strictly
to the practice field, he transferred
to Carson-Newman to actually play
football, clueless that his life's trajectory
would change.
Faculty and alumni gather during homecoming for the
dedication of the Dougherty Science Center lobby.
