2015 Carmel Bach Festival Brings a Bohemian Vibe N ymphs, sprites and sparkling lights will transform Carmel Valley Ranch into a magical Bohemian forest during the Carmel Bach Festival's opening gala on July 17. "Bach, Bohemia and Beyond" is the theme for the festival's 78th season, which spotlights the composer's connections to the Eastern European region that is part of today's Czech Republic. " [ The theme draws from] this Bohemian spirit of artistic innovation and creativity. And, we're really drawing on how Carmel used to be a Bohemian artists' enclave. That Bohemian spirit has always been integral to the town's identity," says Nicola Reilly, the event's marketing and development director. Festival Artistic Director and conductor Paul Goodwin incorporated music by Bach and Beethoven into this year's program, as well as Dvorak, Stravinsky, Bartok, Mozart and others. A world premiere by renowned com- poser Benjamin Wallfisch also figures into the 2015 schedule, as do around 80 other events taking place between July 18 and August 1. "It's a very lush and rich program with a lot of very powerful and very emotional music. It's about the passion for the art itself," says Reilly. This year also marks the festival's second annual family concert at the Sunset Center. The July 25 gathering introduces youngsters to classical com- positions that tell the story of a boy and his magical horse. Food and relat- ed activities follow the morning presentation. The family concert is one of several Carmel Bach Festival events that locals may find especially appealing. "It's a great opportunity to get into venues you wouldn't normally visit," says Reilly. "We do concerts at San Carlos Cathedral in downtown Monterey and the Carmel Mission Basilica. You get to hear music that was meant to be performed in spaces like that." Tickets for Carmel Bach Festival concerts range from $15 to $125, with dis- counts available for students and active and retired military members.
