Monterey Rock & Rod Festival, May 15-16, Monterey County Fair and Event Center, downtown Monterey T ake a step back into the '50s and '60s for this nostalgic look at the music, clothes and cars of that era, and all for a good cause. For the first time the event will be held in two places, Friday at the fairgrounds and Saturday in down- town Monterey, where pre-1975 classic cars will be showcased. Providing the musical soundtrack for this trip back in time will be Chris Montez ("Let's Dance"), The Yard Dogs and Jeremy "Elvis" Pearce. It all benefits The Gateway Center, a nonprofit that provides life skills to adults with intellectual disabilities. www.mon- tereyrockrod.com HipNic VII, May 15-17, Fernwood Resort, Big Sur T his is the quintessential Big Sur experience. Camping under a canopy of redwoods, eclectic roots country music in a scenic mead- ow during the day and lively roadhouse music in a tavern at night and acts such as the namesake band, The Mother Hips, with special guest Al Jardine of the Beach Boys, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Flamin' Groovies and The Brothers Comatose. Single-day tickets are also available if you don't want to camp but still capture the good-time vibes of this gathering of the tribes. www.folkyeah.com Boz Scaggs, 8pm, Friday, May 22, Sunset Center, Carmel E ver since he started in the Steve Miller Band in the '60s, Boz Scaggs has been defy- ing expectations. He broke out big with smooth and soulful hits like "Lowdown," "Lido Shuffle" and "Harbor Lights," but he's also delved deep into his roots with rock, blues, R&B, late-night jazz and even country. His latest album, "A Fool to Care," was recorded over four days in Nashville, and draws inspiration from the music of Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, his home state. A true American original. www.sunset- center.org California Roots Music and Arts Festival, May 22-24, Monterey County Fair and Event Center O nly in its 6th year, "Cali Roots," as it is popularly called, has become one of the largest reggae rock festivals in the country. And it keeps expanding on its foundation of reggae rock, a more amped-up, rocked out version of traditional Jamaican reggae, with the addition this year of hip-hop artists The Roots, soul-rock of Michael Franti & Spearhead and punk ska of Fishbone. This event sells out every year, so get those tickets soon or you'll be scouring Craigslist and Facebook to get those ducats. www.californiarootsfestival.com Santa Cruz American Music Festival, 11am-7pm, May 23-24, Aptos Village Park, Aptos W hen one of its founders stepped down, organizers of the Santa Cruz Blues Festival felt it was time to make some other changes to better reflect the genres of music the festival was presenting. Thus the new Santa Cruz American Music Festival, with blues artists such as Bonnie Raitt and Coco Montoya, but also country artists Big & Rich and Kellie Pickler, New Orleans funk of Big Sam's Funky Nation and the Texican rock of Los Lonely Boys. Everything else pretty much stays the same: the attractive venue, beer, wine and food vendors Rocker Boz Scaggs hit a high in the late 1970s with his Billboard #2 album, Silk Degrees.
