RETAILOBSERVER.COM JUNE 2015 48 L ighting is one of the elements of design and kitchens and bathrooms are the spaces where lighting is most often used and is most critical. It can enhance the look and feel of a space or detract from it if not done correctly. Understanding lighting for these rooms is essential for kitchen and bath designers, interior designers, lighting designers, contractors, and anyone else involved in lighting residential spaces. With so many changes impacting the lighting industry, three critical issues stand out: changing lighting technology, sustainable lighting design approaches, and lighting for aging-in-place design. When taking these issues into consideration, you must still be able to create a lighting concept that is aesthetically pleasing and enhances the architecture, materials, and finishes in the space. Today it is more important than ever for professionals to stay on the cutting-edge of the latest trends in lighting. The NKBA's new book, Kitchen & Bath Lighting is written by renowned lighting authority Daniel Blitzer and co-authored by Tammy MacKay, AKBD, NCIDQ, LEED Green Associate. This long awaited book is a go-to resource for designing, planning, and installing lighting in residential projects. It begins with the basic fundamentals of light, color, and vision with the early chapters focusing on how we see materials, spaces, and each other; how to calibrate lighting for different tasks; and how to modulate lighting as we age. The book then progresses through every stage of the residential lighting design process with comprehensive coverage of light sources, fixtures, controls, design, and documentation. The importance of daylight is explained as are ways to integrate daylight and artificial light. Choosing and comparing light sources and fixtures leads to the discussion of design development including the selection of light sources, luminaires, and controls. The processes involved in locating equipment, calculating illumination, and addressing code compliance are explored in depth as are documenting the lighting design and communicating the design to the construction team. These are important topics for any industry professional involved with designing lighting and getting it built. Full color photographs and illustrations throughout make this a visually absorbing experience. The book has been added to the NKBA's Professional Resource Library. The nine volumes that make up the library are essential reference for industry professionals and are required reading at NKBA supported and accredited college programs for students preparing to enter the industry. They are also the basis for the NKBA certification exams. Daniel Blitzer is lighting certified and serves as principal faculty member at the Philips Lighting Application Center. He is a member and past president of the Designer's Lighting Forum of NY and a director of the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education. He also serves on the steer- ing committee of the Next Generation Luminaires design competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers. Tammy MacKay, AKBD, NCIDQ, LEED Green Associate is an Edmonton, Alberta based registered interior designer and Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer. She heads up a boutique interior design firm where she works on both commercial and residential projects of varying scope. She is also a lighting instructor at the University of Alberta. Kitchen & Bath Lighting is published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., the leading publisher of interior design education.
