FOUNDING DIRECTOR ECONOMICS AND FINANCE INSTITUTE South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics Hartsville, SC The School The Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) was founded in 1988 as an advanced high school with an "early college" curriculum to educate scientifically astute leaders vital to the economic development of the state. The school provides a two-year flagship residential learning environment with a 10:1 student-teacher ratio for the most academically able high school juniors and seniors of the state (average SAT score of 1382/2071 for class of 2009). GSSM hosts a diverse student body, 50% female/27% minority, from 83 of the state's 300-plus high schools and 35 of the state's 46 counties, preparing them for careers in engineering, technology, medicine and the sciences. Students benefit from a full humanities curriculum as well as hands-on scientific research in a corporate or university R&D laboratory. Ninety-three percent of students are accepted to their first or second choice of colleges among leading institutions throughout the nation, including Harvard and MIT. The 2009 graduating class of 58 led all South Carolina schools with the largest number of National Merit Semi-Finalists and amassed more than $10 million in scholarships. All faculty members have master's degrees, and 80% have doctorates. One of only 15 public residential high schools in the country that specialize in science and mathematics, GSSM is also ranked among the best academic secondary schools in the nation. Named by Newsweek one of the country's Top Twenty elite public high schools, GSSM broke ground in 2008 to more than double its size. The school is governed by a 16-member Board of Trustees and supported by state funds, the GSSM Foundation, and the Business Advisory Council. Visit the school website at www.SCGSSM.org. The Economics and Finance Institute The Institute is founded on the principle that technology-based businesses generate economic development benefiting the country, region, state, communities, and individuals. A goal of the Institute is to teach gifted young people trained in science and technology how to effectively develop careers and beneficial relationships between science and business. In close consultation with the school, the Institute will provide a coordinated curriculum and specialized faculty to complement the school's classroom instruction by infusing real-world economic considerations into science, mathematics, and humanities instruction. The Founding Director The Founding Director will create a vision, design a curriculum, and hire faculty for a unique institute to prepare advanced science and mathematics secondary students for careers in technology-based business. After the first term of employment, the Director will teach at least one class each semester. The Director will report to the GSSM President and work closely with the President and the Foundation Executive Director in generating support for the Institute. S/he will work closely with all faculty to infuse economic and scientific thinking across the curriculum. Additional information is available upon request.
