Deans of Congress Receive 2011 FREEDOMAWARD
Senator Daniel K. Inouye (HI) and Congressman John Dingell (MI) received the 19th annual FreedomAward on Thursday, November 17 during a ceremony held in the Capitol's historic Naonal Statuary Hall. In aendance to congratulate the awardeesweremembers of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and Board of Trustees aswell as
colleagues fromthe House and Senate andmany honored guests.With 108 years of combined service in the U.S. Congress, Senator Inouye and Congressman Dingell exemplify the spirit of the FreedomAward,which is to honor thosewho have advanced greater public understanding and appreci- aon of America's representave democracy.
Senator Inouye receives the award fromRon Sarasin, president of USCHS, and Senator Thad Cochran (MS). Inouye reflected on his first days in Congress and a tour of the Capitol he received fromSpeaker of the House SamRayburn.
Congressman Dingellwas introduced by a fellowcongressman fromMichigan, FredUpton (MI),who presented the award alongwith Ron Sarasin. Dingell spoke about his "lifeme of memories" in the Capitol and the inspiraon he receives from themen andwomen of the pastwho helped shape the "extraordinary instuon" of Congress.
