VendScreen's Android- powered touchscreen device is a new tool that attaches to vending machines to display the nutrition information for each product offered. Founder and CEO Paresh Patel says the device will help ease the burden on the vending industry, which the FDA estimates will have to put in 14 mil- lion hours annually to comply with new federal regulations requiring those who operate 20 or more machines to display calorie counts of each item. Consumers get valuable nutrition information, see ads and can redeem coupons, while manufacturers get essential pur- chasing data. There's even a virtual assistant, "Jen," who makes the experience seamless. The device syncs with back-end databases to maintain up-to-date nutrition information and automatically adds new products' nutrition facts. Most important, it retrofits into almost any vending machine. Glenn D. Butler, co-founder and CTO of VendScreen, says 500 units will debut in April, followed by 10,000 more in May and June. The seaweed craze has hit snack foods in full force, but Rub with Love shows the power of nori in this Asian-inspired seasoning from chef and restau- rateur Tom Douglas. The Seattle-based chef and James Beard Award winner has combined hot, smoky chiles, toasted sesame seeds and flakes of dried seaweed to create this distinc- tive flavor profile—ideal on seared fish, meat or tofu. tomdouglas.com Walker & Sons Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning. Made in the heart of Cajun country, this seasoning is as authentic as Louisiana can deliver. Varieties include Original, White Pepper Blend and Hot Blend—the latter of which the company claims is "sure to set your mouth on fire." Despite the alarming name, this business has a loving story behind it: Each time the founder's mother used the recipe that inspired the blend, she would get an affectionate "slap" on the back and a kiss on the cheek thanking her for another great Cajun meal. slapyamama.com |SFM| Eva Meszaros is associate editor of Specialty Food Magazine.
