The lack of make-up air can cause serious health hazards in the home. Many designers are not aware of this requirement and overlook budgeting for makeup air. The presentation will address the need for make-up air, as well as solutions. Dross * 0.1 NKBA CEU, 1.0 NARI CEU, NAHB 1.00 CE Hour, 1 AIA LU Hour Since the beginning of time, humans have lived with a day/night cycle, which also happens to balance perfectly with the needs of the body's Circadian Rhythm. With the creation of fluorescent and more recently solid-state, artificial light has now added unnatural color to evening light, thus causing disruption of the body's physiological cycle, resulting in unexpected medial issues. • Natural Light – the direction, intensity, and color of natural light serves the needs of humans, plants, and animals. • Artificial Light – From fire to LED, humans have used some sort of artificial light source. Why has light become an issue? • Health – we will then look at a number of health issues and possible concerns that have been impacted by the inappropriate use of light and how correct lighting can improve a person's overall wellbeing. With new technology, there is more that needs to be considered in the planning stages of good lighting solutions. Learning Objectives: • Discuss the day-night cycle of the Earth and how that interacts with the Circadian Rhythm of the human • Describe the characteristics of artificial light and how they interact with the human body and the Circadian Rhythm • Explain specific lighting concerns and needs of a variety of people, including seniors, teens, and newborns • Describe how to plan lighting that does not interrupt the body's natural rhythms and functions and how the correct lighting has been shown to actually improve some medical conditions • Recognize the correct light needed to facilitate good rest Block 3: 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. • Understanding the New Consumer – Michael Hetherman, CKD • 0.1 NKBA CEU, 1.0 NARI CEU, NAHB 1.00 CE Hour This session focuses on identifying two very distinct types of consumers that are emerging in the 21st century and how these consumers have an impact both socially and economically. These two types of consumers are called "NEOs" and "Traditionals", as originally identified by Dr. Ross Honeywill in his book NEO Power. Members of the NEO group are considered socially progressive and can be typified as "Big Spenders,"", whereas Traditionals are reluctant spenders and take a more conservative approach to investing. Speaker Mike Hetherman will outline how to understand these two categories of consumers and what drives their motivation to buy. Learning Objectives: • Identify the characteristics and differences between the NEO and Traditionals consumer • Discuss how to offer unique value propositions and communicate effectively when speaking to each type of consumer
