108 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } DECEMBER/JANUARY 2015/2016 { education } AS WINE & SPIRITS EDUCATION TRUST CEO Ian Harris ('80) took the podium to welcome more than 70 Bay Area Diploma students and graduates to an Alumni Insight Series lecture, the world's largest educator in the field of wines and spirits made the world's largest market for wine a top priority. The London-based non-profit saw an unprec- edented 26% growth in U.S. exam takers over the last year and a healthy 9% increase globally. Harris, who has guided the company's continuous growth since his appointment in 2002, was brimming with optimism, "There's a thirst for wine knowledge here and a growing number of WSET program providers to reach that potential." Headlining this first-of-its-kind alumni gath- ering on the West Coast were wine reviewer Antonio Galloni, rum maker Maggie Campbell ('14) and local saké advocate Beau Timken. They shared keen insights into their respective fields and news about current projects with inspired talks from the perspectives of brand, maker and commentator.
