Welcome Incoming M1s into one festive, meaningful weekend Conrad Moy, MD '61, still maintains his practice in the Lawndale neighbor- hood near the College of Medicine in Chicago. Although he's undergone knee replacement surgery, he also still plays tennis five days a week. "I think it's vital at our age to exercise like mad," Moy said. During a dinner and awards celebration that followed the reception, the Distinguished Alumnus Award was bestowed upon Jerome Hershman, MD '57, distinguished professor, department of medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (see related story, page 36). John C. Mason Jr. '53, MD '55, Res '59, outgoing chair of the Medical Alumni Council, was honored for his service (see related story, page 38). Even after reminiscing and dancing well into the night, many of the reunion alumni were on hand the next morning for the White Coat Ceremony in the UIC Forum. The keynote address was delivered by Michael Bristow '66, MD '70, PhD '71, professor of medicine and of cardiology, co-director of the Cardiovascular Institute at the University of Colorado and biotechnology entrepreneur (see related story, page 40). "It was incredibly well-conceived, well-conducted and poignant," Bristow said after watching students cross the stage to receive their white coats. "It takes you back and closes the circle." Students and their parents also were moved by the event. "It was so intimate, so nicely done," said Sharon Hartrich, who saw her daughter, Molly, receive her white coat. "I feel so fortunate to be here as she realizes her dream." "They made them feel this is the beginning of something special," said Peter LoPresti, who with his wife, Blanca, watched their son, Peter Jr., go through the ceremony. "It makes you realize that he's not just taking classes. He's going to be a doctor someday." ILLINOIS MEDICINE | 35
