4 ❘ SPECIALTY FOOD MAGAZINE specialtyfood.com CONTRIBUTORS MEET DEANNA TING Trends & Happenings, Bites by the Bay, Retail Therapy, Specialty Food Association News D eanna Ting recently joined Specialty Food Magazine as its new managing editor. A hungry globetrotter, she loves seeking out new foods to try on her travels. What is one of your favorite articles you've written recently? I love visiting San Francisco, and it was great to weave a few of my favorite restaurants into "Bites by the Bay." I also loved speaking to different retailers for "Retail Therapy." It's always so interesting to get their perspectives on running a successful business. What's your fondest food memory? I have so many, but learning how to cook and bake with my family would be at the top of my list. One of my favorites was making tangyuan (Chinese glutinous rice balls). Instead of the traditional red- bean paste flling, my grandma and I would fll them with our favorite spread—peanut butter. I miss making those with her. What's the strangest food/meal you've ever had? How was it? Blowfsh "gentleman bits," a.k.a. fugu shirako. I was in Kyoto, Japan, at a locals-only restaurant, and it was a part of the omakase (chef 's choice) menu. Te chef was so proud of it, I couldn't refuse! To be honest, it wasn't terrible, but I don't think I'd want to eat it again anytime soon—or risk getting poisoned (blowfsh is potentially toxic if not prepared correctly). What is your favorite food city? It's way too hard for me to just choose one. In the U.S., it's a three-way tie between New York City, Los Angeles (my hometown), and Honolulu. Outside of the U.S., I'd say Florence, Italy; Hong Kong; Istanbul; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Seoul; Singapore; and Tokyo. Eat out or stay in? Both! I love cooking at home, but I also love going out and exploring new places, including local spots in my neighborhood—Jackson Heights, Queens. It's got some of the best food in New York, I think, especially if you love Tai, Himalayan, Indian, and Colombian cuisines— which I defnitely do.
