Best Medicine? S urgeon Dale Varner has long believed that there's a better way to deliver healthcare in the U.S. As an associate medical director of resource steward- ship for managed-care organization Kaiser Permanente's Colorado Perma- nente Medical Group, he is convinced that "fee for service" medicine—the prevailing model in the U.S. that pays American doctors for each test they order— is in the best interest of the doctor, not the patient. Now a second-year MBA at the University of Denver's Daniels College of Busi- ness in Colorado, Varner decided to go to business school to build on models such as Kaiser Permanente's, which rewards doctors based on the health and wellness of their patients. "I realized that there was a lot I didn't know about the business of healthcare and a lot more I could bring to the table if I learned," says Varner. "I don't want to start my own venture. I just want to do my job better." BizEd May/June 2012 55
