Panel Presentation: Panel Discussion: Starting Independent Cooperatives, Studios, and Schools On Friday, May 25th at 2:00pm, metal artists and jewelers discuss how and why they started independent cooperative, private/non-profit instructional studios, and schools. Come listen, ask questions, and start planning your own program! Khobe has been making jewelry for nearly 20 years. Inspired by a silversmithing class in college, her love of creating personal adornment has continued on. Khobe has studied with acclaimed instructors across the country. She now makes custom jewelry and wedding rings, and teaches jewelry workshops at her studio in Long Beach, California. Johanna lives and works in Scottsdale as a jeweler. She owns and operates Harold Studio, a working environment for jewelers and hobbyists that supplies all their tools and equipment needed to make fine jewelry. After she graduated from the University of Arizona, she got her Jewelry Technician and Graduate Jeweler diplomas from the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts. Since 2008, Johanna also works as a jeweler and stone setter for Steven Kretchmer Design. Founder of The Crucible, a non-profit industrial arts education facility and gallery, Michael is known for his creativity and ability to make challenging artwork and ideas possible. Active in the San Francisco arts community, he has worked as a sculptor, teacher, and facilitator. Michael's sculptures are hybrids of impossible pairings and momentous environments coming together to radiate destructive and re-constructive energy. His art showcases a strong juxtaposition between materials including; metals and glass, stone and kinetics, fire and liquid, 3D objects and video. In the late 70's, Jay started his goldsmithing career, worked in Hawaii, and then moved to San Diego in 1980. Jay was the "The Gaslamp Jeweler" in the lobby of the Jeweler's Exchange Building, executing custom gold work until 1985. He taught classes and did custom work at the University of California San Diego's Craft Center for 24 years. In 2005 he started Whaley Studios, teaching classes and workshops, hosting outside instructors, and launched a popular weekly internet interview show. He also designs tools and products for the jewelry trade.
