Novasep adds two labs to US facility LYON, FRANCE—Novasep, a contract manufacturer, is building a new synthesis laboratory and a kilo- scale laboratory in its Boothwyn, PA facility. The additions will expand the company's chemistry and purification services and enable it to produce syn- thetic molecules needed for biological testing and preclinical trials. The labs, slated for completion in May, will include 50-liter reactors, cryogenic capabilities, chromatography pro- cesses, and analytical tools for process R&D. Study by Foster Delivery Science, U of Texas shows value of ultrafiltration PUTNAM, CT—A study by Foster Delivery Science and the University of Texas-Austin's School of Pharmacy shows that combining ultrafiltration with hot-melt extrusion reduced drug development time because it increased the speed of screening amorphous solid dispersions. Such formulations are used to improve the bioavailability APIs in oral dosage forms. According the the authors, ultrafiltration helps accelerate measurement of free API concentrations in these formulations compared to other technologies. AAI-CML adds oral solid dosage equipment, work shift to boost capacity WILMINGTON, NC—AAIPharma Services and Cambridge Major Labo- ratories (AAI-CML), a contract manu- facturer and developer has added equip- ment to its facility here that expands the company's capacity to manufacture oral solid dosage forms. The new equipment includes a coater for its fluid-bed dryer and high-shear mixer, an extruder- spheronizer, and a Bosch KKE 1700 capsule checkweigher. The new equip- ment and the addition of a second shift increases the company's solid dosage manufacturing capacity by about 35 percent. Colorcon buys pharma sugar-sphere business from Paulaur HARLEYSVILLE, PA—Colorcon acquired the pharmaceutical sugar- sphere product line from Paulaur, Cranbury, NJ, which is exiting the pharmaceutical sector to focus on con- fectionaries. The addition comple- ments Colorcon's Suglets product line. The spheres, also called seeds or pel- lets, can also be made from other excipients and are used to make multi- particulate dosage forms. Ashland's Kentucky site receives ExciPact certification CALVERT CITY, KY—Ashland Specialty Ingredients ISP Chemicals received ExciPact certification of its site here. The first US facility to receive ExciPact certification, the Calvert City site manufactures and packages polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), also known as povidone, and poly- vinyl polypyrrolidone (PVPP), also known as crospovidone. PVP is used in film coatings and as binder in tablets, and PVPP serves as a binder and disintegrant. The facility joins 25
