The company chooses partners who help the people in its Hunts Point, New York, neighborhood, as well as throughout the tri-state area. "So many of our employees volunteer their time to make Baldor Cares a success. Depending on the event, you'll see an outpouring of support. It's really pervasive in our culture," Thomas McQuillan, business analyst and head of special projects at Baldor, says. In 2014, Baldor donated half a million pounds of overflow food from its warehouses to Food Bank for NYC. Educating and feeding local kids is a priority: The company hosted 30 children from the nearby Hyde Charter School for a cooking demo given by chef Michael White. Each child walked away with a box containing all the ingredients to reproduce the same healthy pasta dish at home for their families. Interactive student demos are part of a growing educational program at Baldor's Bronx Culinary Stadium. And the distributor donates ingredients to Edible Schoolyard NYC. In addition, Part of the Solution, a fully functioning soup kitchen that serves family-style meals to those in need, relies on Baldor's generosity every year. Their fifth partnership is close to the company's heart. When founder Kevin Murphy died of pancreatic cancer in 2013, the company became a consistent supporter of the Lustgarten Foundation, acting as a major sponsor for their Annual Cure for Pancreatic Cancer Walk in Manhattan. At the last walk, 200 employees participated. 76 ❘ SPECIALTY FOOD MAGAZINE specialtyfood.com
