Hall of Fame moments Athletics inducts six student-athletes, 1976 team into newly named hall Six former student-athletes and one championship team were inducted into Central Michigan University's newly christened Marcy Weston CMU Athletics Hall of Fame at the CMU Events Center during a ceremony Sept. 30. "The hall of fame ceremony truly is one of the signature evenings of each year for CMU Athletics," said Director of Athletics Dave Heeke. "It is a special night for everyone to celebrate the rich history and tradition of our program. The class of 2012 is: • Reggie Allen (football, 1995-98) • Eli (Barnes) Beshear (softball, 1996-99) • Nicole Bills (gymnastics, 1997-2000) • Chris (Cooper) Gaudard (track and field/cross country, 1985-89) • Greg Richardson (track and field, 1996-2000) • John Rollins (wrestling, 1958-61) • The 1976 field hockey team Each of the six inductees and a representative from the field hockey team gave acceptance speeches to the family members, friends, current Hall of Fame members and other supporters of CMU athletics in attendance. Honoring a legend CMU President Dr. George E. Ross unveiled the renaming of the Hall of Fame to reflect Marcy Weston's impact on the world of intercollegiate athletics. Several donors came forward to support the Events Center project specifically tied to having Weston, CMU's Senior Associate Athletics Director, become the namesake for the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame. Weston started her illustrious CMU career as a field hockey mentor in 1972 and then became the volleyball coach and women's basketball coach in 1974. She served as the volleyball coach from 1974 until 1988. The NCAA recognized Weston in 1991 for her contributions to the formative decade of intercollegiate women's basketball, naming her among a list of nine major contributors. She was elected into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame, which now bears her name, in 2004. Celebrating field hockey's '70s successes In addition to its recognition at the Hall of Fame ceremony, the 1976 field hockey team also was honored before the current team's contest against Missouri State Sept. 1 at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. Members of the 1976 championship team, including former head coach Mary Bottaro, were recognized at midfield prior to the game in front of a crowd of more than 200 spectators. The 1976 team was presented a plaque commemorating its achievements, which included a 20-1-1 record and a fifth-place finish at the AIAW National Championships. Following the Chippewas' 4-0 win over Missouri State – the 200th in the head coaching career of current coach Cristy Freese, who succeeded Bottaro in 1986 – the current and former CMU teams gathered in the Indoor Athletic Complex and celebrated as the plaque was mounted inside the field hockey locker room. • centralight winter '11 33
