Quality time Mary Lou Peters, '68, of Mackinaw City, and her grandson, Rudi Kelley of Cheboygan, learned about magnets, chemistry, rockets and astronomy during Grandparents U in June. Rudi, a self-proclaimed inventor, says he also enjoyed an astronomy class that included a visit to the Brooks Hall Astronomical Observatory. "It's great to spend time with Rudi and show him a little slice of the world outside his hometown," Peters says. "I love being back on campus, too, and seeing things that are the same and so many things that have changed." About 110 grandparents and grandchildren participated in this year's three-day Grandparents U, a summer camp that includes hands-on educational sessions conducted by faculty members, along with other fun activities for grandparents and children ages 8 to 12. Participants eat and sleep in the residence halls, attend special classes together and experience many highlights of the CMU campus during Grandparents U. For information about next June's Grandparents U, call the Alumni Relations offi ce at 800-358-6903. • Celebrating 50 years Brian Baker, MA '93, helped the Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work Department celebrate its 50th anniversary in April with an exhibit he curated about Native American stereotypes and the "Americana" Indian. Shown here, student Sam Betcher, a family studies major from Dryden, listens as Baker discusses the exhibit. Baker is an associate professor of ethnic studies and American Indian studies at California State University, Sacramento, and he is a member of the Bad River Chippewas. SASW faculty and alumni also celebrated the department's 50th anniversary with a convocation that included guest speakers and an alumni panel, as well as an evening event at Riverwood Golf Course. • centralight fall '10 3 PHOTO BY PEGGY BRISBANE PHOTO BY PEGGY BRISBANE
