Honoring women Daniel Ramirez was this year's Olga J. and G. Roland Denison Visiting Professor of Native American Studies. He taught a humanities course, and he created this painting, "The Women of Many Nations," depicting the pride and honor among Native American women across the United States. The painting features women from four regions of the country – north, south, east and west – four sacred colors – white, red, yellow and black – and four sacred plants – sweetgrass, cedar, tobacco and sage. Ramirez's great-grandmother was one of the fi rst people to make Eastern Woodland baskets, which she sold on the streets of Mount Pleasant 100 years ago. • Get connected Stay connected to CMU even better now through the new CMU Connect mobile device application.
