Enrollment at CMU is up four percent, which is phenomenal considering the state of the economy and the declining number of high school graduates in Michigan. We have a record number of freshmen and transfer students on campus this year; we have a record number of minority students, and we have the highest ever retention rate. We are extremely fortunate for such prosperity while enrollments at other Michigan universities are declining. We are preparing for our new roommates in the Health Professions Building: the College of Medicine. The College of Medicine will be occupying a 64,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building (off the southeast corner near the Carls Center entrance). The addition is scheduled to be complete in spring 2012 with the first cohort of 100 medical students beginning fall 2012. The College of Medicine will be the eighth college at CMU, joining the College of Business Administration, the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Graduate Studies, the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Science and Technology, and, of course, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. Showing the amount of progress made in this new college endeavor, the College of Medicine has hired its founding dean: Ernest Yoder, M.D., Ph.D. The four associate deans also have been named: Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord is the associate dean of student affairs for the College of Medicine; Dr. Sean Kesterson is the associate dean of clinical affairs and hospital relations and chief medical officer; College of Medicine addition will be complete in spring 2012. Dr. Nehad El-Sawi is the associate dean of medical education and faculty development, and Deborah Biggs is the associate dean of administration and finance. The College of Medicine is a separate college, but we have already begun working collaboratively with Dean Yoder. I am certain that he will be a dynamic, visionary leader for the College of Medicine. Watch for more news about collaborative projects between The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions and the College of Medicine. In the meantime, please enjoy this issue of The Pulse. The accomplishments of our talented and dedicated faculty and students, as evidenced by stories in this issue, have been critical requirements for the university to embark on the ambitious goal of starting a medical college.
