44 SMOKESHOP June 2016 UPDATE Pipe >>>MERCHANDISE & NEWS FROM THE PIPE WORLD Salty Dog's Plug from Dan Tobacco An English sailing tradition has returned with Salty Dogs plug tobacco manufactured in Denmark for Germany's Dan Tobacco. Just as English sailors, known as "salty dogs," would sail with a solid pocket-sized block of pipe tobacco and slice off a piece to rub out and smoke as needed, Salty Dogs is a solid piece of real plug tobacco that lets smokers experience this traditional ritual of freshly-sliced and rubbed tobacco. Selected sweet Virginia tobaccos are seasoned with a touch of Perique and enhanced with a another sailor tradition—Caribbean rum—before lengthy aging in a press to create an imposingly dark-hued tobacco that's medium to strong in strength and medium to full in flavor with plenty of plenty of dried fruit notes, pleasant aroma, and a comfortable, cool smoke. Recommended for small bowls, the plug tobacco is packaged in 50gm pouches. F&K Cigar Company, Saint Louis, Mo., Tel: (314) 423-1968, Email: gezvan@fkcigar.com Founder's Collection, Peterson of Dublin's Take on Traditional English Blends Peterson of Dublin's Founders' Collection, a trio of three English-style blends, pays tribute to the three men who formed Kapp & Peterson Ltd. in Dublin in 1865—German immigrant brothers Friedrich and Heinrich Kapp, and Latvian master pipe maker Charles Peterson. 1865 Mixture is a robust, luxurious blend of fine premium Virginia leaves and strong dose of Latakia that provides a full- bodied smoke for the seasoned pipe smoker. Founder's Choice is a unique aromatic tobacco crafted from a blend of bright Virginia, flavorful Oriental, and mellow Burley tobaccos that are layered, gently pressed, and cut into cubes. Sweet black Cavendish is added, and the entire mixed lightly infused with vanilla, rum, and mango to give this fresh and fruity tobacco a truly distinctive finish. Signature Flake is a traditional English Flake combined with natural bright flue-cured Virginias from Africa and Brazil, lightly cased before pressing and slicing, creating a "subtle flavor of spice with a hint of sweetness." Arango Cigar Reintroduces Lane Ltd.'s PLC Aromatic Pipe Tobacco Arango Cigar Co. announced it is now the exclusive U.S. distributor for PLC aromatic bulk pipe tobacco. Arango distributed the product nationwide until about ten years ago, when the manufacturer, Lane Ltd. (now Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lane Ltd.), discontinued the blend. "Long after Lane stopped producing PLC," said Arango's president Michael Gold, "we noted that consumers continued to ask retailers for the tobacco." This prompted Arango and STG Lane to once again carry the product. "We are confident it will quickly regain its popularity, as smokers rediscover the enjoyable smoke," Gold added. PLC is a mild- to medium-strength mixture, based on ribbon-cut Golden Cavendish tobacco, with a light touch of cherry flavoring for sweetness. When opening the package, there is a welcoming fragrance due to the select Cavendish. PLC lights easily, after which the cherry flavor increases, but without overpowering the delicate tobacco aroma. A bonus is its ability to draw compliments from others nearby. Overall, this well-balanced mixture is an excellent choice for new and seasoned smokers as well. PLC is packaged in five-pound bags, offered at a wholesale cost of $122.50. Arango Cigar Co., Northbrook, Ill., Toll-free: (800) 222-4427, Fax: (847) 480-1221, Email: ArangoCigar@aol.com. Bits&Pieces > Missouri Meerschaum Co. gave a presentation about the company and its corn cob pipes and at the monthly meeting of the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club at Cigar & Tabac in Overland Park, Kansas on April 21. The manufacturer reports that the club, which has hosted its annual Pipe & Tobacco Expo for 17 years, is making a "great effort" to reach out to new pipe smokers.
