Free jet principle - patent protected Expansion and Drying The free jet principle is used in steam processing for the expansion of cut material, and for heating tobacco prior to drying. The principle is also used to achieve low temperature drying by the use of high speed air vortices. Using this system, rapid drying occurs accompanied by evaporative cooling. This results in both the tobacco and the exit air temperatures being much lower than the heating air temperature. Drying tobacco at low temperatures avoids caramelising of naturally occurring or applied sugar in the form of casings. The tobacco maintains its elasticity, and casing losses and colour changes are minimised.
