32 | JOURNEY IN MEMORY FACULTY & STAFF JEWELL CURRY 87, d. April 12, 2016, administrative assistant. Curry served in the University's library from 1972 until she retired in 1994. After retiring from Carson-Newman she worked at McFarland and Gann, PC in Jefferson City. She was a member of Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church in Dandridge. She is survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several great- grandchildren. BOBBY GANN 75, d. Nov. 1, 2015, maintenance staff. Gann joined Carson-Newman in 1985. A resident of Dandridge, he was a member of Sartain Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Gann was an avid Jefferson County Patriots fan, following both football and basketball. He is survived by his wife, Alberta Lee Gann, a son and four grandchildren. DR. ROBERT "BOB" MCCRAY 83, d. May 15, 2016, trustee. A 1954 alumnus, McCray served for 17 years on the University's Board of Trustees. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Carson-Newman in 1982. He received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He retired from Dandridge's First Baptist Church after serving 47 years as senior pastor. He was affectionately known as "the pastor of Jefferson County." Survivors include his wife Becky '54, a daughter and two grandchildren. LAWRENCE PURKEY 59, d. Dec. 16, 2015, maintenance staff. A resident of New Market, Purkey served the the University from 2002 to 2006. He is survived by his wife Gail Purkey, a son, daughter and a grandchild. RICHARD "RICK" THOMAS 46, d. Nov. 12, 2014, maintenance staff. A member of Blue Springs Baptist Church, Thomas resided in Jefferson City. He joined the University in 2002 and served the institution until his passing.
