DEDICATION OF CALDER SCULPTURE
Alexander Calder'sMountains and Clouds sculpture in the Hart Senate Office Building is Calder's last work and the only one to combine amobile (suspended element) and stabile (standing sculpture). On November 10, 1976, Caldermet with the Archi- tect of the Capitol and finalized themodel for the piece; he died the next day. In 1979, public funds for the sculpture fell vicm to cost-cungmeasures, but in 1983 former Senator Nicholas Brady began a campaign to raise private funds to complete the sculpture. Installaon began in the fall of 1985 with themobile elements, and the stabile elements were installed by November 1986. The building had been designed with the sculpture inmind, so the 39-ton weight of the piece did not present addional problems.
Themobile elements of Calder's piece are currently kept staonary.
