be artists such as Wayne Shorter Quartet, Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Kurt Elling, Gregory Porter, The Bad Plus, Joshua Redman, Richard Bona, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Davina and the Vagabonds. That's 110 perform- ances, educational events, conversations, and exhibits on eight stages, for 30 hours of live music over two days and three nights. There's just one word for that: Epic. www.montereyjazzfestival.org Three Dog Night 8pm, Wednesday, Sept. 21 Sunset Center, Carmel It's hard to believe that next year, Three Dog Night will celebrate its 50th anniversary. It's also hard to believe they had so many hits back in the day, but once you start naming them, they seem endless. The band had 21 consecutive top 40 hits from 1969 through 1974, including three #1 singles and seven singles that sold more than a million copies. Songs like "One," "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Joy to the World," "Shambala," "Black and White" and "Old Fashioned Love Song," are still staples of classic rock radio. The band was also instrumental in introducing talented songwriters to the world, including Paul Williams, Hoyt Axton, Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Leo Sayer. Just try not to sing along! www.sunsetcenter.org Taste of Carmel Thursday, Oct. 6 Carmel Mission, Carmel This year, Carmel celebrates its centennial year, so Taste of Carmel is pulling out all the stops. The opening night festivities in the court- yard of the historic Carmel Mission may get all the attention, but Taste of Carmel takes place over several days and includes lavish gatherings, food and wine tours, arts adventures, live music and outdoor activities. Once again, The Money Band rocks the opening night event, where patrons can sample delicious offerings from more than 30 restaurants, caterers and special- ty shops and wine from more than 20 wineries. The theme this year is Bohemian, in a nod to Carmel's roots as a bohemian enclave and its centennial year. It's one of the best parties of the year. www.tasteofcarmel.com Carmel International Film Festival Oct. 10-23 Various venues, Carmel-by-the-Sea Last year, this burgeoning film festival screened a handful of relatively unknown films, including "Spotlight," "Room," "Anomalisa" and "Son of Saul." All four later garnered a host of Academy Award nominations, with "Spotlight" going on to win Best Picture, "Son of Saul" for Best Foreign Film and Brie Larson of "Room" for Best Actress. Its organizers' ability to select not only Oscar-cal- iber films, but smaller, critically acclaimed indies is putting this film festival on the map. The festival will screen at least 50 independent films, includ- ing feature-length, documentaries, shorts and student films as well as 3D. Which ones will go on to greater acclaim this year? Judge for your- self. Sunset Center serves as its headquarters and main screening theater. www.carmelfilmfest.com Richard Thompson/ Blind Boys of Alabama 8pm, Friday, Oct. 28 Sunset Center If singer, songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson had any interest in fame and all that it comes with, he'd be as famous as Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page. Rolling Stone named him one of the "Top 20 Guitarists of All Time," and he's regarded as one of the best songwriters in rock, with songs covered by artists such as Bonnie Raitt, R.E.M., Los Lobos and Elvis Costello. He's the co-founder of the influential folk-rock group Fairport Convention and has recorded more than 40 albums, many of them critically acclaimed. Joining Thompson for this double bill will be gospel legends the Blind Boys of Alabama, who have been together in one way or another since 1944 and have won five Grammy Awards. By the way, the Blind Boys have also recorded a Richard Thompson song! An inspired and inspiring pairing. www.sunsetcenter.org The Wayne Shorter Quartet perfoms at the Monterey Jazz Festival on Sept. 18. Three Dog Night will perform at Sunset Center on Sept. 21.
