Jesse Corsaut has been creating superbly crafted painted and sculpted portraits, such as this of his daughter Jackie as a child, in his Pacific Grove studio for more than 50 years. esse Corsaut is quite probably one of the finest, most superbly talented Monterey Peninsula artists you've never heard of. And that is a deep injustice. His work is seen daily by hundreds of visitors and locals alike, but say his name and chances are you will be met with a blank stare. The bust of Ed Ricketts mounted near where the pioneering marine biologist died at Wave and Drake in Monterey, the heroic fisherman sculpture at Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf and the bust of Cannery Row's beloved Kalisa Moore, forever toasting passerby with upraised wine glass…all are Corsaut works. THE EARLY YEARS Corsaut began painting while in the fifth grade in his hometown of Hutchison, Kansas. "I saw some ar tists doing 'quick painting,' the kind of knock-off stuff people sell by the side of the road," he recalls. Fascinated, he pestered his parents into buying him some paints. By high school, he was a national award-winning painter. His is an ar tistic family, incidentally. Sister Aneta Corsaut was an accomplished actress, best known for por- traying Helen Crump, Sheriff Andy's Mayberr y girlfriend on the 1960s' "Andy Griffith Show." The budding painter scored a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute but Uncle Sam intervened, drafting him into the peacetime Army of 1948.
