understood what we wanted to achieve." Both hotels are contemporary Californian and although the interior design is different, they reflect their setting, Chen says. "They are not highly decorated," he says. "They are clean and modern, although not modern with a capital M." In the Palo Alto location, guests have access to a fitness center and a rooftop pool with cabanas. Staff can provide recommendations for shopping, running paths and Bay Area activities. Packages like "The Perfect Pampered Day Experience" include a private car to Stanford Shopping Center for a spa and shopping expe- rience. There are also wine packages with Thomas Fogarty Winery, which include a vine- yard tour or a private tasting. And on site, no detail is too small to enrich a guest's experience. At a recent stay, Carmel Magazine Publisher Steve Snider admired what he says were "two very unique Rickenbacker guitars, one a six-string and one a 12-string, hanging on the wall in the hotel." When Snider mentioned his interest in the guitars, the staff explained they were part of Mr. Chen's private collection, and offered to send them up to Snider's room to play. "They told me they were sorry they couldn't give me an amp, but they could provide me with headphones," Snider says. "The hotel far exceed- ed our expectations from the moment we arrived. We had a spectacular lunch, which fea- tured amazing house-made potato chips and freshly made entrees and salads with micro herbs. The open kitchen and intimate dining room made us feel right at home, and our serv- er and the chef could not have been more pleasant. Everything is included, so the chance to enjoy desserts, fine wines and delicious gourmet food from the menu had no limitations. The staff catered to our every whim. Every detail was modern luxury and truly a six-star experience." The Clement Palo Alto is located at 711 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, Calif. 650/322-7111 or www.theclementpaloalto.com. Guitars from the private collection of hotel President Clement Chen, III, hang in the hotel entry. The staff has graciously lent out the guitars to guests. 270 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S U M M E R / F A L L 2 0 1 6
