The Collection Brings Designer Italian Knits to Carmel B Y B R E T T W I L B U R S harleen Esfahani used to be a stylist on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills; now she operates The Collection, a boutique in Carmel featuring high-end Italian knits, hand-painted and bejewelled designer jeans, bags and jewelry. "We have one-of-a-kind knitwear by an Italian designer who used to work for Missioni," she says. "She never repeats herself." Esfahani grew up in an ancient home in Iran, with handcarved scenes of people, fruit and ani- mals, and rooms made of mirrored mosaics that she would spend hours observing. "It was magical and mysterious," she says. "It brings out a different part of your soul." She brings her love of fashion and the unique to her shop, where she embellishes bags and clothing with her own creative elements. "Ever since I was a child, I loved things that there were just one of," she says. "It is no longer special if there are 50 of the same sweater." Her biggest pride, however, is the colorful knitwear that she exclusively carries. "It is both dramatic and fun," Esfahani says. "The knits feel like heaven. Our designer, Aida Lay, is so refined. She is an alchemist of design." The Collection is located on Ocean Ave., SW cor- ner of Monte Verde, in downtown Carmel. Call 310-600-8945 for more information.
