S P O R T I N G C L A S S I C S • 11 This 'N That JULIA'S OCTOBER AUCTION TO FEATURE $20 MILLION IN RARE FIREARMS Over the years James D. Julia has distinguished itself as the foremost auctioneer in the world for high-end, rare, and valuable guns. Their auctions have consistently and regularly been the highest grossing firearms sales in the world. At $20-$21 million, its October 4-7 sale will be the biggest so far. The auction will feature rare Civil War items, important military arms, a firearms collection from Germany, extraordinary Winchester rifles, outstanding Colts, and, as always, one of the finest offerings of sporting and collectible arms. Most notable will be Annie Oakley's personal Cashmore shotgun. One of the greatest shootists of all times, Oakley was a mainstay in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which made her a household name throughout the world. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, she offered her services to the U.S. Army to serve as a marksmanship instructor, but was turned down because she was a woman. Being the great patriot that she was, she went home and gathered up most of her trophies and lavish presentation guns and turned them over to the War Bonds Department to generate cash for the purpose of acquiring war bonds. Oakley's 12-gauge William Cashmore Boxlock Ejector Game Gun was made around 1893 (SN 9270). She sold the gun sometime in the early 1920s after she had been badly injured in a car accident. In their ads, Cashmore quoted Oakley as saying: "The gun you made me is exactly what I ordered and, if anything, more than I expected." This great historical piece is offered with a presale estimate of $125,000-$175,000. Another highlight of the sale is the William Larkin Moore Collection of Fine Sporting Arms. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence . . . From the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable . . . The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that's good . . . A free people ought to be armed." – George Washington
