F irst off, a big heartfelt thank you goes out to all the firefighters who took part in protecting our communi- ties during the Soberanes Fire that started in Big Sur and consumed over 130,000 acres during approximately 3 months. They are true heroes who risked their lives to save ours and camped out here for months. Also the outpouring of support, both financially and physically from our own community, was amazing. So many people and businesses dedicated their time and resources to helping others during a very scary time. It was really awesome to see the locals step up to help. Carmel-by-the-Sea is officially 100 years old. This is a milestone for sure: congratulations! Our sleepy little city has aged well. While retaining its small town charm and Bohemian roots, it has become a world-class destination as one of the most beautiful places on earth to visit or live. Hats off to all those along the way who helped make the city what it is today. A lot has changed here in Carmel over the past 100 years but much has stayed the same. Carmel is a place of inspiration for artists, writers, musicians and others. A much less romantic milestone would be the fact that I will be turning 60 this year. Yikes! Other than the receding hairline and expanding waistline, there is arthritis setting in and other less than desirable effects that go along with age. For what seems like about the past 10 years I have received the AARP mem- bership stuff in the mail and was offended; how dare they? Well guess what, I am getting old. Time to accept the facts and embrace the future. Still not joining AARP but I will take that senior discount! Life is short and it really comes down to what you make of it. I intend make the best of it. This issue of Carmel Magazine marks our 65th edition. We are more than 16 years old and still going strong. It's fun to look back at some of those early issues or to go to eBay and plug in a search for Carmel Magazine. Some of the early issues, which I had long forgotten about, appear on eBay and the descrip- tions to entice you to buy them are pretty funny. The fact is this magazine has a long shelf life and provides something that inspires people to keep it. I believe our content and presentation play a huge role in keeping us going. A big thank you goes out to all of the advertisers over the years; we couldn't have done it without you. The writers and photographers who contribute to this also deserve big thanks, as do our readers and subscribers. As far as the rumors of the digital domain taking over the print industry, the demand for this magazine is at an all-time high. The digital version of our mag- azine's viewership also continues to grow, with well over 300,000 page views in 2016.
