M arotta: Buddy and I grew up a few doors away from each other in Monterey—now we're brothers-in-law— and have always worked on motorcycles and cars together. He bought the car about 10 years ago and when he decided to restore it 2 ½ years ago, he asked if I was interested. Of course I was. Barreto: I specifically wanted this model; I bought it on eBay, of all places. It had a broken speedometer, but I believe it had about 80,000 miles on it. The 3.0 CS was a limited production run and the body was by Karmann. This was the last year they were impor ted to the US, so it's not a grey market car. We took it entirely apar t; it was basically a nut-and-bolt restoration. Marotta: The job took a little over two years, working together when I came home, about once a month. We did all the work ourselves except the body and paint. This car has lots of trim-over-trim and that was hard to put back together. I think we installed the dash five times before we got it right. Barreto: It drives beautifully—and we do drive it, except we wouldn't take it to the Trader Joe's or Costco parking lots. It's not a show queen, though we did take it to the Legends of the Autobahn at Jack Nicklaus Club and McCall Motorspor ts Revival this year. 8 8 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 6 BUDDY BARRETO MONTEREY • NAVAL POST GRADUATE SCHOOL LECTURER DAVE MAROTTA THOUSAND OAKS • MUSICIAN M arotta: Buddy and I grew up a few doors away from basically a nut-and-bolt restoration. 1974 BMW 3.0 CS Photo: Kelli Uldall CARS WE LOVE B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D
