Clever Pantry n m by Jesse Hom-Dawson Kitchen Musts Silpat Macaron Kit I use my nonstick Silpats every time I bake, and the discovery of their macaron kit was life- changing. Macarons are very tricky to make, but this kit, put together with help from legendary pastry chef François Payard, is perfect for both beginner and expert. It includes a mat with circles for perfectly-sized macarons, piping bag and tips, food coloring gels, candy thermometer, pastry brush, dough scraper and plenty of reci- pes. Bonus: Buy the gorgeous recipe book from famed macaron bakery Ladurée for the perfect gift for macaron die-hards! silpat.com Blades by Rick Moonen Knives There's a tendency to approach celebrity prod- ucts with a healthy dose of skepticism—I'll pass on the Guy Fieri wine, thanks. But Rick Moonen is a respected chef whose cooking I admire, so I was willing to take a chance on his new knife set. Moonen makes a great point that, "So often, so many sets have three or four knives you never use," which is why it was great to get his knife kit and see products that I actually use often—and it's affordable! The essentials are there: chef's knife, serrated knife, paring knife, etc. There was even a fish spatula, zester/grater combo and kitchen scissors. But what sold me was the chef's roll. No longer will I show up to my local knife sharpeners with my knives wrapped up in kitchen towels (please don't judge me)! bladesbymoonen.com UrbanTrend Kitchen Gadgets While I'm not a big fan of single-use appliances (is that egg slicer really worth taking up all that room in your kitchen drawer?), I can get behind well-made, affordable multi-use gadgets. My new favorite do-all gadget is UrbanTrend's multi peeler rotary head, which is good for anything from mangos to carrots, and features both straight and serrated blades. The cherry on top is their reversible measuring cup and spoon set, which features a liquid measuring cup up top and removable dry ingredients spoons on the bottom, perfect for those who have small kitchens or college students with limited storage space. t m Gourmet Gifts 1 8 | t h e c l e v e r r o o t
