Ingram, a North Carolina sharecropper who was falsely and cruelly accused of intent to rape a white girl in 1951, and boxer Sugar Ray Robinson about to deliver a punishing punch to Carmen Basilio in 1957. Although Zimmerman created a treasure trove of color images during his career, the first book to feature his work delves exclusively into a selection of his black and white work. "America in Black and White" is the seem- ingly unlikely collaboration between Arne De Winde, a lecturer/researcher at the Depar tment of Literar y Studies of the University of Leuven in Belgium and the John G. Zimmerman Archive, maintained by Zimer- man's family in Pacific Grove. "In 2015, I published a book on the imagina- tion of sports, and more specifically nicknames in sports, entitled 'De Adelaar van Benidorm' (The Eagle of Benidorm). While working on this publication, we hit upon John G. Zimmerman's iconic sports photography," De Winde says. "It was the start of an intense and inspiring coop- eration with the archive." "Since we started the archive, we thought the first book about my father's work should be to feature his best-known work," says Linda Zimmerman. She works with her brothers Darryl and Greg at their father's archive, located in an art-filled, renovated home near Asilomar Conference Center. "But Arne's enthusiasm convinced us to go ahead with this project."
