Creative Camaraderie with Carmel's Ar t Walk B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D E ven though—or perhaps because—artists tend to work in isolation, they are a social bunch, ready for a party and a good time. That was certainly true in Carmel-by-the-Sea's early days, when the village's population contained a great number of artists of all types. Now, a group of 21st-century artists, led by painter Joaquin Turner, is seeking to bring back that vibe. "Early Carmel ar tists loved hanging out together, gathering at parties and bonfires on the beach," Turner says. "We want to bring back that camaraderie among the artists themselves. That's what star ted Carmel." To that end, he reached out to his fellow artists and created the Carmel Art Walk. "We've limited the walk strictly to local, artist-owned galleries," Turner says. The 21 par- ticipating artists open their doors from 5-8 pm on the second Saturday of every month, afford- ing a rare glimpse into the creative process. The walks are already bringing awareness to these owner/ar tists. "Many people didn't know we existed," Turner states. "But we're here…tucked away in the many little cour tyards of Carmel." Art Walks are scheduled for Februar y 11, March 11 and April 8. For a map and more infor- mation, visit www.carmelartwalk.com.
